The Westview HS Theatre Vision Statement:
The Westview HS Theatre Program.....
          Maintains high expectations.
Strives to provide a creative outlet for every student.
Challenges students to explore different cultures and life experiences              while developing a greater sense of themselves and their world.
Promotes a strong sense of community.
Believes there are no small parts

The Westview High School Theatre program originated in the fall of 1994 when the school opened. Westview was the fourth high school to be built in the Beaverton School District, and just 8 short years later we are now the largest high school in Oregon (2,300+ and growing). Opening a new school brings much excitement as well as challenges. We wanted our theatre program to be different, innovative and provocative while still encompassing many of the traditional elements that have been so successful in our school district.

We worked to establish many traditions and a particular "culture" in our theatre program. Because our school is so large, it became obvious that our season would have to include many opportunities so many students could participate. Our season is produced entirely as extra-curricular. In addition to the full season of shows, theatre classes are responsible for one additional play and our Theatre Sports Tournaments.

Every year our season consists of six productions. We always open with a children's show in October, followed by our fall production in November. We perform a variety show in early January as a benefit for the Cascade AIDS Project, a local foundation. The musical, a yearly extravaganza, takes place the first and second weeks in March, followed by our spring show at the end of April. Ending each year is our student directed One-Act Play Festival. These six shows make for a very busy year. Every other year our goal is to produce a musical that isn't as well known or not as readily produced.

Along with our school activities, Westview high school has an extremely active Thespian troupe. Our charter was granted our first year and we have been inducting an average of 25 students each year. Oregon Thespians are very active. The Oregon Thespians sponsor three different events throughout the year. We always attend each event--the Improvisation Festival, the Regional Acting Competition and the State Thespian Conference.

Westview has had three students as members of the Oregon State Thespian Board and our Director, Carolyn Reid, has also served on the board for many years. We have had the honor of placing in many acting events and were awarded top honors when two of our shows ( SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK and A PIECE OF MY HEART) were selected Mainstage Showcase Productions for the state conference. This was indeed an honor. As a group we take many trips. Each summer we travel to the International Thespian Festival in Nebraska, competing in Individual Events, seeing shows, attending workshops, auditioning and enjoying the other 2000 Thespians from around the country who attend.

Every other year, during spring break, Juniors and Seniors travel to New York City for a week of theatre, sightseeing, shopping and fabulous fun. We are proud of what we have accomplished in these early years. We have established a reputation of theatrical excellence.

We are well respected in our school and surrounding community. It's been a great beginning, and we're looking forward to many more wonderful years on the Westview stage.
